As per January 14th 2020, Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7, which means that there will be no more security updates and that banks and other institutions will, from that moment on, be qualifying your Windows 7 pc as unsafe, even if you have an up-to-date virus scanner.
If you are unsure which version of Windows you have, this is how to check it:
Do you see this icon at the bottom left of your task bar? Then you have Windows 7
Do you see this icon at the bottom left of your task bar? Then you have Windows 10
Or check this way:
- For Windows 7 😉
Click Start.
Right-click Computer.
Select Properties in the menu that appears.
You will see a new window with info on your Windows version. - For Windows 10 🙂
In the menu on the left-hand side, right-click Computer (or This pc).
In the menu that opens, click Properties. If you do not see this, click the downward arrow at the top right.
You will see a new window with info on your Windows version.
If you have Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 (or an Apple/Mac) then you don’t need to do anything😊
If you have Windows 7, then there are basically 2 options:
- You could switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10 yourself by downloading the “Windows Media Creation Tool” and performing the upgrade from Windows 7. Make sure you have a back-up of all your personal data such as e-mails, photo’s, documents etc. in case something goes wrong during the upgrade process. If you are unwilling or unable to do this yourself, expect a rate between €35 and €105 if we do it for you, depending on what needs to be installed and back-upped in personal data such as e-mails, photo’s, documents, and whether back-ups need to made etc.
- Another good option is simultaneously replacing the hard disk for an SSD type, making the pc/laptop a lot faster. Installing a new hard disk means a new, clean Windows needs to be installed: expected rate will be between €70,- and €140,- depending on what needs to be installed and back-upped in personal data such as e-mails, photo’s, documents etc., plus the cost for a new SSD disk, starting from around €40,- depending on its size.
With both these options you do not need to buy a new license, because Windows 10 will be upgraded/installed with your currently valid Windows 7 license.
